The 2016 Vintage
We were holding aces come harvest. With near-perfect growing season starting early and ideal weather seen through to October 14th, the mild July and August days allowed our berries to reach perfect ripeness.
SMV Chardonnay and the Judgment of Paris
In 1976, in celebration of the American Bicentennial, Steven
Spurrier, a wine-shop owner in Paris, organized a blind tasting, pitting
renowned reds from Bordeaux and whites from Burgundy against Cabernet
Sauvignons and Chardonnays from California — varietals considered the
exclusive domain of the French. The California wines included Spring
Mountain Vineyard 1973 Chardonnay, which bested Premier Cru and Grand
Cru Burgundy, coming in fourth overall and second among the California
producers. The Paris Tasting put Napa Valley firmly on the world stage
and elevated the region’s stature.
About Spring Mountain Vineyard
Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 845-acre estate on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley
where austere soils produce extremely low yields of intensely flavored, long-lived wines. Only 225 acres
are planted to vine, representing 135 discrete vineyard blocks with multiple soil types, exposures and
microclimates. The privately owned estate is comprised of four historic vineyards first planted to vine in
the late 1800s. Only estate bottled wines are produced.
